The collection contains material relating to the development of railroads in southwest Virginia, including: a contract (1858) between the Virginia & Kentucky Railroad Co. and Albert H. Dorr and John Gardner for the construction of a railroad from Abingdon to the Cumberland Gap; a survey report (1886 June 28) from Oramel Barrett to the Clinch Valley Railroad Co. discussing the selection of a route; a note (1886 June 28) from D. Bassett to G.V. Litchfield about Barrett's survey report; a letter (1887 November 26) from G.V. Litchfield to J.C. Seake regarding the contracting of coal for shipment; and the opinion of J[oel?] W. Tucker (ca. 1858) concerning the contract between the Virginia & Kentucky Railroad Co. and Dorr & Co.
